TIMOTHY TAYLOR’S £2MILLION EXPANSION

27th January 2003

Knowle BreweryThis year Timothy Taylor's Brewery is undergoing the biggest transformation in its history - as well as the most expensive. Costing nearly £2 million pounds, we aim to increase our Fermenting Capacity and automate our Racking (filling casks) and Loading Systems.
To increase the amount we can brew, we are adding 4 new Fermenters. They will be the same, as those put in 2000, which give us the option of fermenting the beer like our traditional Open Fermenters or storing the beer like normal Maturation Tanks. We shall be able to brew over a third more than we can produce at the moment.
The Racking Machine will mean that we can reduce the amount of hard physical work such as barrel rolling and lifting empty casks. It will be more efficient than our existing machine and will give us greater flexibility during our operations. More importantly, it will be a much quieter operation and therefore disturb our neighbours less in the early mornings.
A Palletiser and a Loading Table will mean we can load our Dray Lorries and store our stock easily and efficiently on Pallets or "Locator Boards".

WEEK ONE

30th January 2003

We started work on our new extension on January 20th and we hope that the building will be completed by the end of July. The equipment will be installed from May onwards and we hope that it will be working at the end of August, with commercial production beginning a little later.
First comes the demolition of the old Loading Bay and "Foreign" Beer store (Lagers and Stouts for our Tied Estate). Afterwards we shall excavate the area to be developed and then the building will start in earnest.
Here are the pictures after the first week of demolition. There are more to come in the following weeks.

WEEK FOUR

14th February 2003

The piling has been done to underpin the foundations that will be built over the next three weeks. Over 40 columns were put in as shown in the pictures. The Piles are driven from the ground surface to the bedrock: up to 11 metres in depth. We are indebted to our Structural Engineer Paul Hutchinson (of the Hutchinson - Whitlam Partnership in Ilkley) for his calculations which led to the piling being efficiently carried out.

The next few weeks will see further excavation and foundation work. Accordingly, the Progress of The Brewery Expansion will continue when Walls and Girder Work are begun in about a month's time.

TIMOTHY TAYLOR’S £2MILLION EXPANSION

Week 52 - January 5th 2004

After a year the whole New Development has been completed. The New Fermenting Tanks have been working since August 2003. The New Cask Filler (Racker) and New Warehouse have been in constant use since November 2003. The Palletiser and The New Labeller/Bung Presser were working just before Christmas. These new pieces of equipment will help us at Taylor's brew and distribute our beer efficiently and hygienically for the future. A big thank you comes from us to all the Builders, Engineers and Contractors who supported us through this huge and complex project.
