John and Lorraine Mitchell of The Town Hall Tavern certainly know how to serve a good pint of beer. Hot on the heels from picking up the Beautiful Beer Award in June the couple have been recognised for the quality of their cask ales by Cask Marque. Both nationwide schemes include a rigorous inspection and demand the very highest standards of cellar management and beer dispensing. Once poured, the beers themselves are tested for temperature, appearance, aroma and taste.

John and Lorraine, who have run the popular city centre pub for almost 6 years, were presented with their Cask Marque plaque by Timothy Taylor’s Operations Manager Marc Craddock.

Commenting on the latest award John said: “Coming so soon after the Beautiful Beer award this really is the icing on the cake and makes all the hard work we put in worthwhile. We strive to serve the perfect pint every time.”

Awards are nothing new for John and Lorraine, who have regularly won Leeds & District CAMRA Pub of the Season and also been featured in the Good Beer Guide for the last four years.

The brewing industry combined with the beef industry and local businesses in West Yorkshire gathered for a black tie Beef and Beer Dinner last week to raise money for the Sue Ryder Care Manorlands Hospice near Keighley.

250 guests sampled a selection of Timothy Taylor’s award winning beers before sitting down to enjoy prime sirloin of the very finest Aberdeen Angus beef produced by Dovecote Park of Pontefract, suppliers to Waitrose.

The highlight of the evening was undoubtedly the Charity auction, which together with a lucky dip hop tub and quiz raised an amazing £40,000. A cheque for £20,000 was also handed over by Sovereign Health Care making a grand total of £60,000. Business entrepreneur Archie Norman and former Chairman of ASDA then captivated guests with an entertaining after dinner speech.

The dinner has now become established as the main fundraising event of the annual Keighley Manorlands Challenge. Brewing industry support came from Timothy Taylor, Carlsberg, Coors, Inbev, Scottish & Newcastle, BBPA, Beautiful Beer and Cask Marquee together with a number of local pubs.

Timothy Taylor’s Managing Director Charles Dent said, “I’d like to thank every member of the Keighley Challenge Committee for all their hard work and commitment. There is no doubt quality beers and the finest beef sirloins make ‘perfect partners’ and prove an irresistible combination for a good party”.

Sue Ryder Care Area Fundraising Manager Jodie Shepherd added, “On behalf of Manorlands I’d like to add our thanks to the Challenge Committee and also say a huge thank you to all the guests for their astonishing generosity”.

It’s just a year since Nick Hindle took over the tenancy at the Fleece Inn, Haworth but in that short time he has turned the village pub into an award-winning business.

Hot on the heels of winning the much-prized Beautiful Beer Award the Fleece has been awarded the prestigious Cask Marque for the quality of its beer.

The Timothy Taylor owned Fleece, once a favourite watering hole of Branwell Bronte, brother of the famous sisters, has long been recognised for its fine ales.

Cask Marque Assessor Stuart Noble said: “I have rarely seen a cellar so clean and tidy. Nick’s attention to detail and standards of hygiene are exemplary and reflect his military background. This professionalism is also reflected in all aspects of back of bar work. What makes Nick so successful is not only these factors but also his enthusiasm for the product and his love of his beers, particularly the complete Timothy Taylor’s cask range. Anyone travelling to Haworth to sample the rare spectacle of all of Taylor’s beers behind one bar can be assured that their journey will not be in vain and that the beers on offer will be of the highest quality and the surroundings of the highest comfort and cleanliness.

Nick’s efforts reflect what the Beautiful Beer award and Cask Marque are all about – setting the highest standards of quality and passion for beer.”

Timothy Taylor’s Tied Estate Manager Andrew Daykin added: “Nick’s commitment and enthusiasm shine through in every aspect of the service he and his staff provide. These accolades are just reward for all the hard work he has put in over the last 12 months.”

Earlier in the year Timothy Taylor’s Landlord was voted favourite cask ale in Yorkshire and the North West in the first Cask Marque ‘Best of British Beer Awards’. Split into regions the national awards were organised in association with the Daily Telegraph and the Morning Advertiser. Landlord was the only beer to win two regions.

VOLUNTEER'S BLOOMING DISPLAY IS RECOGNISED BY TOP FLOWER SHOW

The Volunteers Arms, Keighley.
The Volunteers Arms, Keighley.

The Volunteers Arms, Keighley had a moment of fame in May when its magnificent floral display was highlighted in the ‘Blooming Pubs’ competition during the BBC Chelsea Flower Show Programme. Presenter and highly respected gardening expert Alan Titchmarch was extremely impressed with the Volunteers array of blooms and the use of such a small area.

The Volunteers on Lawkholme Lane has won Keighley in Bloom Competition for Licensed Premises for the last 3 years and last year picked up a Silver award in the Yorkshire in Bloom competition.

Keith & Julie Wilson, who have run The Volunteers for almost 4 years, spend many hours working on their annual display.
Landlord Keith Wilson said: “Its brilliant to be mentioned in such esteemed company and nice to know our efforts are appreciated”.

Despite the weather this year’s display is now in full bloom.
The Volunteers was the first pub Timothy Taylor bought in December 1859. It proved a wise investment, as this small bar has remained a popular “watering hole” for generations including volunteers from the Drill Hall just across the road.

THE TOWN HALL TAVERN WINS NEW BEER AWARD

29th June 2007

John & Lorraine Mitchell
John & Lorraine Mitchell
The Town Hall Tavern on The Headrow has become the first pub in Leeds to win a prestigious new award for the quality of its beer.

John and Lorraine Mitchell, who have run the popular Timothy Taylor owned city centre pub for 5 years, were presented with the distinctive Beautiful Beer Plaque by Taylor’s Operations Manager Nigel Aston.

The Beautiful Beer Award is a new scheme open to pubs across the country.  The Gold Award, presented to The Town Hall Tavern, recognises pubs that serve great quality beer, both draught and bottled.  A specially trained inspector carried out a thorough audit of the pub, from the storage of beer in the cellar through to the pouring of the beer behind the bar.  To pass the inspection pubs must score at least 85 marks out of 100 in all five categories.  The beers themselves are tested for temperature, appearance, aroma and taste.  All the beers served at The Town Hall Tavern achieved full marks.

The Beautiful Beer assessor who inspected The Town Hall Tavern said “It takes over two hours to carry out a Beautiful Beer inspection so it’s very thorough and the pub has to meet very high standards to pass.  John and Lorraine should be very proud of their achievement.

The Town Hall Tavern is noted for the quality of its cask conditioned ales and always has four Timothy Taylor prize-winning beers on the bar.  As well as a good selection of lagers and bottled beers the pub is one of only a few in the area serving hand pulled ciders.

Awards for quality beer are nothing new for John and Lorraine, who have won Leeds & District CAMRA Pub of the Season on more than one occasion including Autumn 2005 and Winter 2006.  The pub has also featured in the Good Beer Guide for the last 4 years.

Commenting on the award John said “We are obviously delighted to win such a prestigious award and to register an almost perfect score.  As far as I’m aware we’re the only pub in the Leeds area to have been awarded it”.

TIMOTHY TAYLOR LANDLORD IS NORTH’S FAVOURITE CASK ALE

26 April 2007

The votes are in and Timothy Taylor’s Landlord is the only beer to be voted favourite cask ale in two regions in the first ‘British Beer Awards’. Not only that, it also proved to be the third most popular beer in the Central region.

Timothy Taylor Landlord

Timothy Taylor Landlord has been chosen as the top tipple in both the Yorkshire and the North West regions and following a ‘beer election’, held in local pubs across the area.

Cask Marque, which organised the awards in association with national newspaper the Daily Telegraph accredits pubs serving the perfect pint of cask ale. The awards have the backing of organisations including the Campaign for Real Ale and the All-Party Parliamentary Beer Group.

Cask Marque Director Paul Nunny explains: “Cask ale has regional variations in flavours due to the differing characteristics of the key ingredients of malt, hops yeast and water. Burton beers frequently have a sulphur nose, those in East Anglia a higher degree of bitterness, and West Country beers have malty tones. Consumers have their preferences and this competition was designed to find the most popular ales by region.”

To determine the winner drinkers from across the region voted for their favourite cask ale at ‘polling stations’ inside their local Cask Marque accredited pubs, using special voting forms printed on beer mats provided ready for posting into bar-top ballot boxes.

All of the winning brewers will be invited to an awards lunch in London in May, to celebrate their success.

Paul Nunny concludes: “This is the first year of the Best of British Beer Awards and over 2,000 pubs acted as polling stations. Six million £1 off vouchers were printed in the Daily Telegraph to encourage drinkers to visit their ‘local’ and cast their vote. We look forward to building on our success next year and congratulate Timothy Taylor Landlord as the worthy winner of the accolade of the North’s favourite cask ale.

Timothy Taylor’s Managing Director Charles Dent added “There are many fine beers brewed in the North so it is the ultimate honour to be recognised as the best in both Yorkshire and the North West.

Timothy Taylor is now the last independent brewery of its type in West Yorkshire and has been brewing traditional cask conditioned beers in Keighley since 1858. Landlord, the brewery’s classic strong pale ale has won more national awards than any other English beer and is well know as Madonna’s favourite ale.

Cask Marque currently has 3,800 licensees holding the Cask Marque award. These pubs are inspected at least twice a year with assessors checking the cask ales on sale for temperature, appearance, aroma and taste.
